Over 120 records have been established in skating here. Currently, the complex has become improved after an upgrade. The valley was named after Medeo, a nomad who lived in the previous century, who set up his aul in these magical places. The high mountain skating-rink is nice in any weather.

You can admire it from the lookout, 800 steps up a stairway or the winding road under the Mokhnatka (Shaggy) knoll slope that leads to it. It looks entire ly covered with forest from the town (hence, the name). There was a monastic grotto there at the beginning of the previous century. Still to day, pilgrims come to that place and improvise a divine service. Once a year the skating rink covers the ice, and the stadium flanges into a huge, concert pavilio n. "The Asian Voice" ("Asia Da usv") a famous International Festival of music is held, to which not only young Kazakh singers p erform, but Stars around the world.

One of the unique places of the world, the famous Medeo, is located in the gorge which has the same name. It is situated in the Zaliliski Alatau valley (1520-1750 meters above sea level). Skating rink was built in 1972. The skating field is 2.3 meters thick and consists of over 20 different kinds of constructing materials.

Above it there are ferro-concrete plates with 170 km refrigerating pipes installed inside. The system of the ice refrigeration has no analogues in the world and is capable to maintain the ice-cover eight months a year. Square of the ice field is 10.5 thousand sq.m where skaters, hockey-players and figure skaters can train. 112 world records in skating were set on Medeo.

Residents and guests of the southern capital have at their dis posal 5 stadiums, a hippodrome, and a high-altitude Medeo sport complex featuring a unique ice skating-rink located at 1,700 m above sea level. This is where world records have been set many times by world's top skaters. On weekends Medeo is a popular skating place for residents and guests of Almaty. Almaty Cen tral Stadium accommodates 32,000 people. Nearby is the build ing for track and field athletes and a perfectly equipped winter swimming pool.

Anti-sill dam Medeo

Located in 25 km far from Almaty on the height of 1733 meters above sea-level is a beautiful place.
It was built to protect Almaty from flow sills which are formed on the top of the Western Tian-Shan. Dam has three height levels. Each following level was built consecutively.

The reservoir can hold about 6 million cubic meters of water at once. 842 steps lead to the top of the dam. Race competitions are organized on these steps.
